Little things web series review

Little Things is a web series from Dice media and it has already featured on our site. Now it is the time for the expert review.

Alright let me get this out of my system first – I don’t like the Romance genre. And I sat down to watch this series with a prejudice that I am not going to like it. But guess what – I wasn’t disappointed. But guess once more – I wasn’t carried away either. This is what I would call – a feel good series and that’s all about it.
Though the makers are calling this 5-episode series a rom-com, I found the genre to be rather “CUTE”, if you are willing to overlook the semantics that is. Written by Dhruv Sehgal, who is also staring as himself in the lead, the story revolves around Dhruv, originally a Delhiite and also a PHD holder, and his cute and bubbly girlfriend Kavya (played by the Mithila Palkar), and the ‘little things’ they do to get by their days together.
It seems that our lead couple (judging by the 3 episodes I saw and the title of the series) is trying to make a statement that the ‘little things’ that you do when you are in a relationship, is what ignites the spark and fuels the fire in a relationship and the big surprises and larger than life celebrations are just not as important as the small things are.
I am okay with the statement, but I don’t buy it. The reason being simply, the statement cannot be generalized. Ajay Bhuyan has directed the episodes in a way that it feels too good to be true. Until and unless your boyfriend is as cool as Dhruv or your girlfriend is as cute as Kavya and you can get lost in her cuteness and thereby overlook her mischief, the ‘little things’ wouldn’t always sustain a relationship. Everything looks ‘make belief’ (which is what films are anyway); but the series paints a kind of relationship you would want to be in, one that you would dream of and not how relationships actually are. I am not saying such relationships don’t exist but they are just very, very, rare. And let’s be practical…with a live-status, you wouldn’t probably even get a rental accommodation in a metro city unless your landlords are ‘super duper cool’.
The series is brought to us by Dice Media who also gave us ‘Not Fit’, a mockumentary comedy on the life of aspiring actors in the country. Speaking of technicality, ‘Little Things’ is shot with decent production values; superb acting and some pretty cool but scarce, vfx. The on-screen chemistry of Dhruv and Mithila just go off the charts. Worth mentioning is Mithila’s performance which is an absolute treat to watch. Together they make their relationship so cute, innocent and lovable that those who are single among the viewers would get overwhelmed and those in a relationship would get jealous.
Initially, one might get confused as to whether they are a living-in couple or a husband & wife, but the second episode clears this wherein Dhruv states that theirs’ is a two-year old relationship. All in all, I couldn’t think of anything to like or dislike in this series, majorly because this isn’t a genre I like. As aforementioned, I couldn’t even make out the genre. The content and drama is too youth centric and I doubt if middle-age people or even youngsters with a little above-average maturity would watch past the first episode. I wouldn’t give this thumb down, and that is largely due to the performance of the lead actors but I wouldn’t give a thumb up either. I would sign off by saying that the most this series did for me was that it brought a smile on my face at the end of each episode. And maybe that’s why I wouldn’t return to watch the remaining ones either.
